2018 LMS Robotics Into Orbit FLL Competition Teams Announcements

Team selection this year was very difficult due to the great amount of talent that participated in the club this year. This was one of the hardest seasons for selecting teams. There are strict rules on the number of students per team dictated by FIRST LEGO League (FLL) rules. We are very proud of the students for all the hard work they did in a very short amount of time! Many variables are considered when selecting the teams by the 4 coaches and myself. You can read more about the selection criteria that was used in making the Team Selections below.

Competition Team Meetings

Our teams will meet next week on Tuesday, September 20 and Thursday September 22nd at Lincoln, from 3:00 - 5:00. Looking forward, our regional Competition is December 10th from 8:00 am till 6:00 pm. Looking ahead, the regional Competition is December 16th from 8:00 am till 6:00 pm, held at Lincoln Middle School.

We will review the entire schedule for the season at our first meeting. All the Team members listed above are required to attend all meetings going forward.

  • To Join the LMS FLL Competition Teams Google Classroom, you will need a G-Mail account.

  • E-mail Address CAN NOT be a D57 account

  • E-mail address MUST BE associated with Personal Google Account

  • Your Name MUST BE shown in "Name" in the Account Settings.

  • Confirm you are Logged into this Account before entering Join Codes listed below.

  • Make sure you use the Join Code for the team you are assigned to.

  • Complete ALL homework assigned in your team Google Classroom

  2. Print all Into Orbit Challenge Guides and bring to ALL Meetings.

  3. Save all 3 Challenge Guides to Team Members ChromeBooks

  4. Install LEGO Digital Designer on a home computer*

  5. Install EV3 Software on a home computer*

  6. Print & Complete the FLL Competition Team Permission Slip and return to first meeting.

*Software can not be installed on Students ChromeBooks. Software must be installed on a home computer, Windows or Mac.

Competition Team Selection Criteria

-Time Commitment- Attendance was crucial during the club to gauge their time commitment. The reason behind this is the robotics team meets for 4-7 hours per week at school (2 hours on Tuesdays and 2 hours on Thursdays and Saturday meetings) up until the regional competition on December 16, and additional time if the team(s) advance to State Competition in January.

-Homework Assignments- In addition to team meetings, there is mandatory homework/research for the project outside of team meetings. Homework can vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours a week. It is essential (and driven by the students) to complete the homework assignments so the team can compile the information and continually move forward with work on the project and robot. If one student misses an assignment, it affects the progress of the entire team.

Homework completion was evaluated through one assignment asking 3 questions- why the student wanted to be on the team, what they could contribute, & what they hoped to learn from the experience. This assignment was weighted heavily to see the student’s interest level and commitment to the team.

-Teamwork/Ability to work effectively in a group- It is important for students to be able to work well with others (teamwork is a huge component of FLL and one of the 8 Core Values). The students were randomly selected and placed into a group for a 5- minute challenge. We also observed how the kids worked with their teammates during the club portion while building and programming their robots.

-Engagement- The students on the team really want to be there and want to do the work and put forth the effort (which is why last year's teams was so successful). It was important for students to maximize their time while in the club by completing different tasks and participating respectfully within their smaller teams.

-Grades- Students must be in good academic standing to be a member of the team. No exceptions.
